Why you’ll be seeing a lot of teal pumpkins this Halloween

Teal isn’t just the newest fashion color trend for pumpkins. For kids suffering from food allergies, a teal pumpkin represents a lot more. The color teal represents food allergy awareness, and many folks are displaying teal pumpkins to not only show their support but to provide non-food alternatives to Halloween treats. The #TealPumpkinProject started a few years ago and we’re glad to see it catch on. You’ll be seeing a lot of teal pumpkins this year for these 5 reasons:

  1. According to the CDC, the rate of food allergies in children has steadily increased since the 1990s.
  2. Thanks to the Food Allergy Community of East Tennessee (FACET) awareness for food allergies has evolved into the Teal Pumpkin Project and has brought national attention to families daily managing food allergies.
  3. The Teal Pumpkin Project doesn’t just affect families managing food allergies. The benefits of non-food treats are enjoyed by those managing diabetes or other health-related issues that restrict candy indulgences.
  4. Providing non-food treats is a healthy alternative to traditional Halloween candy. Because as we all know, Halloween candy can last long into the following months.
  5. It cuts down on waste— and disappointment. Many children managing diet restrictions have to either give or throw away their treats. 😢

Want to participate? Simply paint or decorate a pumpkin within teal and place it on your doorstep then offer non-food treats. Some families may wonder why you made that decorating choice, but the families who know will appreciate your efforts. Stay safe trick-or-treaters!
